A Devoted Legacy: Dr. Alan Bloom

Alan BloomThe late Alan Bloom, MD '56, was a fixture in the South Bronx where he practiced gastroenterology. Highly respected as a devoted physician, teacher and mentor, Dr. Bloom attributed much of his success to his education and training while at Chicago Medical School (CMS). A first-generation son of immigrant parents, he was accepted only at CMS.

After graduation, he dedicated his career to serving residents and leading the fellowship program at the community hospital, Bronx-Lebanon.

Alan BloomDuring a recent campus visit to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Dr. Bloom's sons, Lee and Jordan, shared how dedicated Dr. Bloom was to his patients, including their memories of late-night visits. There were so many students Dr. Bloom trained that the family recalls that he and his wife, Roslyn, were always welcomed by former students everywhere they traveled.

Dr. Bloom generously created an unrestricted gift to Rosalind Franklin University, now named the Alan A. Bloom Endowment. It supports students by removing economic barriers while helping them achieve their education. While visiting university simulation centers and the new College of Nursing, the Bloom family reflected on their father, including how much he enjoyed mentoring students and hands-on training. The Bloom family believes that Dr. Bloom would be pleased that through his estate, he could support students on their own journey to be the next leaders devoted to providing quality healthcare in their communities.
